Save My Way FAQs

Does my money leave St. Mary's Bank if I use Save My Way?
No. Your money stays right where it is, in an account you already have with St. Mary's Bank — same account, same terms you got when you opened it.
How do I get receipts for my Save My Way/Charity Center donations at tax time?

You'll get both, so you can use whichever is easier:

  • A receipt every month covering your round-up donations, ready by the fifth business day of the month
  • A year-end summary of everything you gave that year

Use the monthly ones as you go or just wait for the year-end summary and hand that to whoever does your taxes. Both are waiting for you in Save My Way in online banking, anytime you want them.

St. Mary's Bank can't give tax advice, so check with a tax professional about donations.

Who can I talk to if I have questions?
Give us a call at 1-888-786-2791 or stop into any St. Mary's Bank branch — we're happy to walk you through it.
My spouse and I share the account. How does that work with Save My Way?
You'll share one Save My Way. Either of you can create, change, or finish a goal, and you'll both see the update. You can each set up your own automatic savings rules, as long as you're both listed on the accounts the money is moving between.
What is Save My Way?
Save My Way is a tool inside St. Mary's Bank online and mobile banking that helps you save without thinking about it. Set a goal — a vacation, a new car, a rainy-day fund — and fill it up with spare change from your everyday purchases, one-time transfers, or automatic transfers you set on a schedule.
Do Save My Way savings goals lock up my money?
Not at all. Think of goals as labels on money you already have — they help you keep track of what's set aside for what. Your money is just as available as it always was, and you can move it between goals anytime.
Which account should I pick to start rounding up?

The St. Mary's Bank checking account tied to the debit card — the one you grab for coffee, gas, and groceries.

Here's a tip: if you put your subscriptions and monthly bills on that same card, those purchases will collect spare change for you too.

What if I don't have enough money in my account to auto-save, transfer, or roundup?

Nothing bad happens. That savings transfer just gets skipped — it picks back up when there's enough in your account again.

How do I know I've got the right charity organization?
Every nonprofit has an EIN (Employer Identification Number) — a unique number the IRS assigns it, a bit like a Social Security number for organizations. If you want to be certain you've found the right group, you can look up its number first at Guidestar, ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer, or the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search tool, then search that exact number in the Giving Center.
I got a new debit card. Do I need to enroll again?
No. Whether your card was lost or just replaced, your round-ups keep going. You don't have to do a thing.
How do round-ups work?

When you buy something with your St. Mary's Bank debit card, we round the purchase up to the next whole dollar and move the spare change into your savings.

Buy a coffee for $4.50, and $0.50 goes into savings. You don't have to do anything — it just happens in the background.

Can someone under 18 make donations?
No. Anyone under 18 can't make donations, and an account with a minor on it can't be used to give — even if there's an adult on the account too. If you'd like to donate, just use an account that doesn't have a minor listed on it.
Can I use round-ups or automatic transfers for more than one goal?

Automatic transfers — yes, as many as you like. You can set up a transfer for every goal you have, and they can all pull from the same checking account.

Roundups work a little differently. Each checking account can feed roundups to one goal at a time. So, if you want roundups going to two different goals, you'd need to use a different checking account for each one.

If you only have one checking account, no problem — just pick the goal you want your spare change going to, and you can switch it to a different goal whenever you'd like.

When does my round-up spare change actually move?

We add up all your roundups from the day and move them together the next day, in one transfer. So, if you bought lunch, gas, and groceries on Monday, you'll see one transfer on Tuesday — not three.

You BoughtYou PaidSpare Change Saved
Lunch$34.56$0.44
Gas$28.72$0.28
Groceries$75.21$0.79

Moved to savings the next day = $1.51

Can I give some of my spare change to charity?

Yes. You can split your round-ups between your savings and a cause you care about, in 10% steps — 90/10, 70/30, half and half, whatever feels right. You can also send all of it to savings, or all of it to charity.

On a $1.51 day with an even split, $0.76 goes to your savings and $0.75 goes to the charity. When it doesn't divide evenly, the extra penny goes to you.

How do I turn round-ups on?

With four simple steps, right in your online or mobile banking:

  1. Open Save My Way and tap the goal you want to fill.
  2. Turn on Roundups.
  3. Pick the St. Mary's Bank checking account your everyday debit card is tied to.
  4. Confirm.

That's it. From then on, every purchase on that card adds a little to your goal.

How many savings goals can I have?
As many as you want. There's no limit.
What's an automatic savings rule?

It's a way to save on autopilot. You decide how much and how often — say, $25 every month — and we move it for you. You can change it, pause it, or turn it off whenever you want. Just keep enough in the account it's pulling from.

What is General Savings?

General Savings is simply the money in your savings account that you haven't assigned to a goal yet.

If you deposit money without putting it toward something specific, that's where it sits. You can move it into a goal whenever you're ready, or pull money back out of a goal and into General Savings just as easily.

Think of it as your "not spoken for yet" pile — always there, always available.

*Annual Percentage Yield (APY) accurate as of 10/23/26. Deposit rates are variable—rates and terms may change at any time after account opening.
Balances of $0.01 - $100,000.00 earn 3.65% APY

Qualification requirements to open account and earn stated APY: open a St. Mary’s Bank High Yield Savings account with a minimum of $10. Maintain an existing or open a St. Mary’s Bank checking account (minimum $10 to open) and add qualifying recurring direct deposit totaling at least $1,500 during each monthly statement cycle. To qualify for the premium interest rate, the primary owner of the High Yield Savings account must also be the primary owner of the St. Mary's Bank checking account receiving the required recurring direct deposits. After opening a High Yield Savings account, you will have up to two statement cycles to establish a St. Mary’s Bank checking account and establish recurring monthly direct deposits to continue earning the stated savings rate. Thereafter, if qualification requirements are not met in any statement cycle, your account balance will automatically earn the base savings rate of 0.05% APY until requirements are met.

Limit one High Yield Savings Account per member.

Qualifying Direct Deposit: A direct deposit is income that is automatically deposited into a member’s St. Mary’s Bank checking account by an employer, government agency, or other qualifying organization. This can include your paycheck, pension, Social Security, or other eligible benefits. Transfers between your St. Mary’s Bank accounts, and payments received through peer-to-peer or money app services are not considered direct deposits.
